Using AI in Genealogy and Family History

I have access to a set of records that focus on a specific branch of my father’s family tree – our Franco-Swiss ancestors. These are the Montécheroux BMD records, which cover a period of 50 years from 1740 to the very eve of the French Revolution in 1789/90. In addition there are other sets of these records, one that covers a period from 1791 to 1792, from 1794 to 1817, and from 1818 to the middle of the century.

The Records are handwritten with some records written in Latin and others in French. I am proficient enough with both languages to be able to extract the event, the dates, along with the principles with a few other minor details. The script in which the records are written is of the ancien regime of the mid-to-late XVIIIe siècle and very difficult, in places, to decipher.

I got the idea of possibly using an AI chatbot to transcribe and translate the records. At first I wasn’t sure that it could be done but I asked first of ChatGPT and it had no problem transcribing this somewhat difficult script and then translating it into English. But the ChatGPT decided at some point to throttle me and that is when I remembered that I was paying Google for a subscription to Gemini. and the little chatbot that could readily took the task at hand..

It took me a few days to collect all 188 images that make up the first 50 years. The workflow consisted of me supplying no more than 10 images at a time which usually represented two or three years worth of records in each pass I requested from Gemini.

After I finished this first phase, I then consulted with Gemini to determine how to proceed to get to the goal of having a narrative created that focused on my ancestors and their immediate families. It was determined that I needed to get the data into a table or two and also to get the data from three descendancy reports that I pulled from ancestry.com. What follows is the narrative that I created using Google’s Gemini.

I’ll admit that I am kind of blown away by the results

The First 25 Years
